WUHAN, Central China, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Ding Feng, runner-up of the 2007 World Cup Final in men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol, was knocked out in the qualification final at the 6th Chinese City Games here on Saturday, with the gold falling into the pocket of shooter Zhang Jian.

The 22-year-old Zhang, leading in the qualification round with 582 points, was dragged into the shoot-off by the Bu Qingpu, 17, from the coastal city of Qingdao. Zhang from Qiqihar of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province achieved 49.5 points in the shoot-off, beating Bu with 1.6 points.

The score of sharpshooter Ding Feng in the qualification round stood at 559 due to gun failure, which prohibited him from getting into the final.

"In the last session of City Games, I didn't obtain medal owing to bad skill, and this time, bad luck," Ding said regretfully.

Ranked No. 4 in the discipline in national shooting team, the 20-year-old ace athlete scored only 29 points in the last set of qualification round.

"It was 19 points less than my worst practice," he said. Gun failure was allowed only once in the round, noted Ding. If the failure occurred twice, the higher score would be recorded.

"For the first time, I shot out just three of the five bullets, and for the second time, only one," he said, adding that no spare gun was brought to the event this time.

Facing the result, the young shooter appeared optimistic. "Fortune favors nobody," he said. "I hit the skids this time, while in next competition, I would be in luck."

Ding clinched the silver medal in men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol of the World Cup Final hosted earlier in Thailand with 783.6 points.

"I would do better in the future," he said. "Most of my teammates in the national squad are already in their 30s, but I am only 20."
